The Martin Collection

Gaywynn and I made a trip to the New Iberia Library, where Gaywynn worked as a associate director of community relations. Mrs. Elaine L. Griffin allowed and assisted us with the viewing of many photographs of the Martin Collection. It was great to make this 'trip back in time'!
It was a true pleasure meeting and spending time with Mrs. Elaine... So grateful!

Local photographer I.A. Martin began his business in 1895. Later, the tradition continued when his son, Caroll Martin, began learning the trade in 1936. Carroll opened his own studio in 1940 and was very successful.
In 1982, the I.A. and Carroll Martin Photo Collection was established at Iberia Parish Library through the dedicated efforts of Dionne Landry, a cousin of Carroll Martin, Louise Cousin, Eleanor Holleman and Lanier Simons.
The current copyrighted collection spans a period of 90 years – 1895 to 1981. The collection consists of prints, negatives, glass plate negatives, vintage cameras and camera equipment and is overseen by curator, Elaine L. Griffin. Over 16,000 prints and negatives including 84 glass negatives have been cataloged to date with more than 100 boxes of negatives still being added to the digital collection.
The Martin collection beautifully illustrates the artistic and historic value of the city and the surrounding area. The collection serves many purposes. Individuals come in looking for photographs of family members or family business places. Many business places also display prints from the collection at their locations. Other business owners search for photographs of their buildings in order to restore them to their original appearance. It is also a great source for people conducting research.

Antique Finish

Since Zjivago sprained his hind leg, it's been tough for him to jump up the counter in order to get to his food.
Just to make it easier for him, while the food bowls have to be of the floor to keep Mr. B, our Pug away, I decided to fluff up this old bench with a turquoise and orange antique finish.

All it took, was sanding down and "beating-up" the old weathered bench.
Applying the two coats of paint.
Sanding down to the desired look, shown in the pictures.
The idea came out the Crowsnesttrading catalog.
I'd like to think it came out pretty good...
Having said this, I've decided to stick with my day job, ha!

A type of bridge you have never seen!

No, your eyes are not deceiving you - the waters have indeed parted! This incredible “sunken” bridge located in the Netherlands is giving visitors a unique way to access a beautiful 17th Century Dutch fort. Designed by RO & AD Architects, the Moses Bridge literally parts the waters that surround the fort, allowing pedestrians to pass through.

A series of moats and fortresses were built over the West Brabant Water Line region of the Netherlands during the 17th century in order to provide protection from invasion by France and Spain . Fort de Roovere was surrounded with a shallow moat that was too deep to march across, and too shallow for boats. In turn the earthen fort had remained protected –until now.

From afar, the Moses Bridge is invisible to the eye. The flow of the moat appears continuous, as the water level remains at the same level, reflecting the surrounding foliage. As visitors approach the fort, the bridge appears as a break in the water with its sloping walls containing it.

First lying flush with the earth, the bridge then descends deeper into the ground. Lined with wood sheet piling for walls, the deck and stairs sit between. The bridge and its components have been made from sustainable hardwood that is Cradle to Cradle Gold certified. The Accoya wood is also treated with a nontoxic coating, protecting it from fungal decay and increasing its durability — an ideal material for a sunken bridge. Like a dam, the walls of the bridge hold the waters of the moat back, and like Moses, the bridge parts the waters so that pedestrians may pass.

The Moses Bridge gives visitors a unique opportunity to pass through parted waters, to eventually meet a historic fortress of defense.

New Orleans Pics

Gaywynn and I finally returned to New Orleans for a first time since before Hurricane Katrina. We were invited to a wedding and while in the Big Easy we had the pleasure of visiting the French Quarter.
We indulged in some fresh oysters at Felix Oyster Bar.
Sunday morning we had brunch in the Quarter and took a leisurely walk through the French Market.
